Dongguan(活力东莞)

Dongguan, located between Shenzhen and Guangzhou, is a city with a unique economic background. After China's reform and opening, its first foreign-funded enterprise came into being in Dongguan's Humen Township. This was a Hong Kong-invested handbag factory that operated according to orders and designs provided by the investors, who also purchased all its products.

Dongguan attracts a lot of businessmen from the different parts of the world. Over 90% of computer manufacturers and related industries in this country will be in trouble if the transport from Guangzhou to Dongguan and Shenzhen ever seizes up, said a joke popular about Dongguan.

With a population of over 7 million, Dongguan is a city of migrants, for there are over 5 million migrant workers and businessmen out of its total population. They are from the different parts of the country to seek for a fortune or a better life.

What a robust city with so many strangers and new comers! Dongguan is the third largest city in Guangdong, only second to Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

It is said that the local private economy takes about 80% of Dongguan's total at present, the highest private proportion in China. Private firms have provided more job opportunities and contributed highly to the state and local tax revenue. They are attractive to overseas businessmen and hire thousands of migrant workers each year. It is estimated that this increasing labor mobility has contributed to between 16-20% of the local economic growth during the past 20 years in Guangdong. But it is hard to maintain the social order and organize those transient job seekers.

Guangdong's private economy has seen a steady development since 1980s. It has contributed a great deal in pushing forward the whole economic situation in South China. A highly mobile society will create a splendid population with creative inspiration and daring business spirit. This is what China needs urgently. Shenzhen and Dongguan have set up a very good example in this regard in China, even in the world.

With Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway passing through, this urban corridor, from Guangzhou to Dongguan, then to Shenzhen and Hong Kong, is the most densely populated area in Guangdong Province. With a huge population of over 30 million and with the most concentrated industries in this area as well, this corridor has caught the imagination of the world.
